While the English water retail market only opened up back in 2017, the Scottish market in contrast opened up way back when in 2008, the first of its kind for businesses and allowing non-domestic customers to research and select the best supplier to suit their needs for the first time ever.
This means that businesses, charities, nonprofits and public sector organisations can all now find their own supplier and sign up with a company that has specific experience of working within their particular industry.
Scottish Water is the wholesaler for the sector and works with licensed providers (known as retailers), with all enquiries directed to them rather than Scottish Water itself. You can easily find out who your current licensed provider is by looking at one of your recent bills or by looking at this handy list we’ve compiled for you.
Can businesses in Scotland switch water suppliers?
Businesses that have been in operation prior to 2008, when the Scottish water market opened up for the first time, and you’ve never considered switching to a different provider then it’s likely that your supplier is currently Business Stream, which was the first non-domestic retailer in Scotland.
However, if you feel as though they’re no longer serving your business interests in the way you’d like or if you think there’s a better fit for you elsewhere, you can of course switch supplier whenever you like.
Switching may seem like a bit of a hassle, but it can yield all sorts of positive results, including cheaper business water rates, cost savings, better deals, better customer service, reduced water consumption, greater water efficiency, bill consolidation and so on.
It usually takes around a month to complete the switching process, but if you’re struggling to navigate your way through the market and aren’t sure which provider to go with, the Switch Supplier team will always be on hand to help.
